Default A question about paint.

My '66 vert was repainted this spring.

My concern:
The nose and headlight bucket and hood have lost a little of what was a mirror-like luster. If I look closely at the reflection of my garage lighting, I can see a very faint texture that resembles the texture of leather seats. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? The fenders, rear deck, etc. still look fine.
I waited only 6 weeks before applying wax. Could that be the problem?

Even though I have searched a number of threads regarding the waiting period before applying wax to new paint, I haven't found one that defines what the consquences would be if applied too soon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It might depend, on what type of paint it was painted in....Laquer, acrylic enamel, eurathane... You need to ask your painter, or the paint mfg. of the time for all the solvents to "gas" out before applying wax.

Could also be incompatiblilty of old finish, to many old layers of paint, etc. Was the car stripped completely? What was used to strip it? If the wrong stripper was used, could be some of it is in the body panels, and is starting to lift the paint. Pics would help.

What kind of paint? Lacquer, bc/cc? Have you tried wet sanding it and buffing it?

all paint 'shrinks' as it gets older and 'cures' (sanding scratches and body filler/panel seams can become particularly noticeable as time goes on, especially as the filler/adhesive also cures....). probably the surface prep showing through a bit. on lacquer they can probably be sanded out to some extent, bc/cc is another story...

If the paint was baked on the wax should not have hurt it. Most recommend about 90 days before the first wax job.

Flourescent lights will show more problems than natural light.

I would go ahead and contact the painter now. Advise him of your concerns and get something in writing should the condition get worse.

The car was completely stripped to bare glass with razor blade and careful sanding. Then epoxy primed, primed, blocked, bc/cc'd. I have pics but haven't figuired out how to post them yet. Car is Milano Maroon
