well after 20 yrs of non-working back up lights, I decided to try to fix.
The wires at the switch were toast at the connections. I took the switch out, cleaned up everything and now the questions begin. Does the switch open. Can I try to put the wires back into the wire metal holders. They dont seem to hold the new wire. Do the metal wire holders come off. Does the hole in the switch bracket line up with the other hole when in reverse or not. Should I just buy a new switch. It seems the black covering is pretty melted

The holes line up when the switch is open, i.e. in neutral. You can take the switch apart. I forget exactly what you can do once you are inside of the switch. It would probably be easier to buy a new one. Since your present one isn't working, you can't mess it up any more by playing with it.

Yes, if it is broke you can try to fix it. It's more fun than just replacing it.
