Default C2 Console Help Needed

I bought a console "repair kit" containing the aluminum insert for the shifter hole surround. I removed the old insert cleaned the console and went to install the insert. It did not fit! I used a file and tried to fit it to my console. Did not work out too well. The old insert is damaged from removal and is not useable. I got another insert and it too does not fit. Anyone ever install one of these? Did it fit? Where did you get it?

Thanks

I replaced mine last summer and it didn't fit either! I used a variable speed dremel (low speed) and a fine sanding wheel to reshape the new insert. The inserts are soft and care must be taken not to bend them.

Know what you mean about the quality of repro parts, I bought a replacement for my Powerglide car. When it arrived the lettering was so much thicker and heavier than the original it was apparent to anyone knowledgeable that it was a replacement. Didn't come close to the original.

That was 10-15 years ago, I've still got the replacement in the original wrapper, I'd rather run the scuffed and scratched original than a poorly made replacement. Don't suppose they've gotten any better . . .

Same case could be made for the poorly made convertible weatherstripping along the rear edge of the vent window/windshield. You know the one, the one that has the wrong end at the top and sticks up above where it should stop by about an inch. Puhleeze guys!!!!

I guess I will get another one and try to fit it useing the dremel. I will try and get a couple of pics of the problem.

Did you remove the old insert and replace it or put the new one on top of the old?

Thanks for the replies.

That is strange. Mine (from Corvette Central) fit perfectly. Yes, I did remove the old.

Paul, it looks like yours has the smaller lined letters as the original, also. Maybe I'll have to check & see if someone is making a better quality repro these days. I'll post a photo of mine if I can find it.

Here it is, notice how the interior of the "P" and "R" letters is almost totally filled in? Sorry, Sorry!! I'll have to look & see who I purchased it from.

I did mine just recently and I had no problems at all neither (I think it was from Zip)

Ron,
I just checked and mine has the thick-letter affliction as well. Funny, I never noticed that! But it looks OK for my needs.

Well, thanks for the info, Paul. Yours looks quite good, and I'm sure mine would too if I went ahead and installed it. But I could see the difference after receiving it, was disappointed, and never did get around to putting it in. I thought by looking yours had the smaller lined letters!!

Who knows, I may give up and install mine, too, after seeing yours. Guess I could always replace it when a better version came along, if desired.

Ron

Tom has a 4 speed, it looks like the one for automatic's fit. I saw Tom's and it does not fit.

I had the same problem when doing the console for my 65 coupe. I got the kit from Corvette Central.
I called Ron at Corvette Paramedics in NJ. and he got me the correct kit. Fit perfect, numbers were the correct size.
Give them a call.

I'm sure they can help you out!

Default Console Rebuild

Tom,
Sorry for the delay, I have not been keeping up with the board. I got mine from Volunteer in TN, but mine was also for a four speed, fit perfectly.

Rick.
Was yours for the 4-speed or automatic? The 4-speeds I've seen look OK, only the autos look wrong as far as number/letter size.

Thanks
I ordered one from Corvette Central this time. I should have it for the weekend. I talked to their tech guy and he said they have had no problems with fit. I am hopeful...we'll see.
