I am having problems on my 64 with the tail lights / brake lights working on one side. I checked and tighten the ground wire and it did not help much. I then took the lights out and grounded the light socket and got them to work, so I know it is a ground problem. Has anyone had this problem and what are some ways to fix it? Thanks for any help.
I just did mine. There should be 2 wires to the light. One goes to the bulb itself, and the other grounds to the post on the pot metal body of the light assembly. You use a speed nut to make the connection and make sure you get it good and tight.

Also check your ground wire making sure it's not bad. Then clean the post making sure you get a good ground

Could be similar to one of my backup lights. One light would not work. If I added a ground to the socket it did. The ground lug is attached to the chrome piece, the socket appears to be slipped into that piece. Believe corrosion between the chrome piece and the socket was preventing the ground.
I did a bubba fix for now, simply stripped a piece of wire and ran it down the length of the socket and wrapped the other around the lens screw. It works, some day I will remove the entire assembly and see if I can clean it or do a better fix. May replace the entire unit but at $180 have other places to spend money first.
Thanks for the support. Last Night I worked on it and sanded the back of the socket frame and got rid of all the oxidation. Also sanded the taillight insert where the socket frame fits. Then did as others mentioned and made sure the ground wire was tight. Found I had to add a few washers to the stud, so the speed nut would be tight. Put everything back and now they work fine.
