Default Shifter ISSUES Help

I just installed a rebuilt shifter on a rebuilt 4 speed transmission.. 1967original equipment. somewhere along the line something got screwed up because to get it into revearse I have to shift left and back rather than left and forward as it should be. The four forward gears are fine. all the rod levers are pointing up. I tried flipping the revearse lever..still pointing up and that didn't allow everthing to line up in the neutral position. Any Clues as to what the issue is?

Been there and done that LOL! You have inadvertently installed the shifter rods on the wrong transmission levers.......OR (and I can't remember) installed the transmission arms on in the wrong direction....I think the latter is correct. That is, if the lever arm goes on the trans "up", then you have installed it "down" leading to reversed locations for the gears. Try to find a stock transmission correctly installed and look at the configuration that the artms are installed.
Good luck.

Quick guess without looking . . . are you sure the reverse lever is supposed to be pointing up . . . . ?

My '62 with a '81 Saginaw has a clearence problem with the reverse rod, so reverse is in the same position as yours. If everything shifts correctly leave it this way. It's a great theft deterent. Just imagine the frustration with someone trying to steal the car and getting it into reverse!

Reverse lever goes down! I did the same thing you did. Had to go underneath and put the reverse lever down. When you go to the left and forward it pulls the reverse lever back when the arm is in the down position. When you have it in the up position, in order to get the lever to shift the gear forward, as it does in the down position, you have to go left and back. Am I confusing you???

Thanks, That makes perfect sense and will give it try. FYI ..the Chevy shop manual I was going by has an illustration showing all levers pointing UP. Can't always go by those old illustrations I guess, or maybe some other Chevy cars had the revearse lever up.
