This is going to put a new spin on engine tuning. I am going to have to start thinking digital instead of analog, and/or mentally converting analog things like vac advance can effect and centrifugal advance as a relation to RPM and manifold vacuum, into digital parameters.
Same with fuel delivery.
The plus side is I will never have to buy another set of jets, accelerator pump cams, centrifugal advance springs, and accompanying gaskets again, and it will be a lot quicker to make changes via the computer.
The minus side is the: oh-oh, I hope I know what I am doing feeling.
Now, if soemone could come up with a digitally controlled camshaft that worked....
I too, am going to do something similar. I bought the Commander 950 computer for my 64 Coupe. I know I am at the bottom of a very steep and long learning curve. I think it is going to take a lot more time than changing springs, jets, pump cams , etc. Now you will be downloading fuel maps and ignition maps, changing injectors, fuel pump settings, etc. But in the long run , I think we will be better off. I love a good challenge !!
Pops
with my cross ram manifold that I have coming, I also got the Accel latest set up as well as the distributor that has two outputs, one for the computer as well as one for the tach.....I am looking forward to it.....
Dollar wise, it would be much less expensive to just fuss with the carb,a nd deal with carb issues as they occur, but this is going to be a real hands on learning experience. Not hard, but it will take a little experimenting.
My fuel and spark maps are mostly OK, but I can feel areas that need improvement/refining.
Since this is an open loop at WOT and closed loop at 60% throttle or less system, I can set it for max economy at cruise, and pour in the gas for best torque at WOT
One nice aspect is if I change altitudes, or modify some component of the engine, i just plug in my computer,a nd make changes as needed.
Mechanicaly, the EFI is much less complex and easier to repair than a carb.
If an injector goes TU, you just isolate which one and replace it.
