I don't think you want to adjust solids with the engine running. There was a good instructional post on this by Duke some time back.

Here it is:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...lve+adjustment

Note the post following the instructions by Duke indicating that there is a revised article - I don't know where to find it. Hopefully someone will know.

Dave

Dave
well, the shop manual and all contemporary advice was to adjust them with the engine running, hot - and that would likely be what piper is thinking about - but yes, the tech paper by Duke and John provides a great way to adjust them cold.

OK, what's wrong with adjusting the valves with the engine running? potentially messy but a LOT more accurate than doing it cold....

Any "accuracy" difference is negligible......... but, if you feel that strongly about it.......... how about adjusting them with the engine running (with oil spurting all over), then let the engine cool, then measure and record lash.

Then the next time, just do them cold (lash to your recorded settings)

i've tried the 'set hot, check cold' routine and find that i get a better feel for the clearances by setting them running and can check & recheck as many times as necessary without having to mess with turn the crank, etc..

as for 'mess', the clips keep the mess to a minimum.

Cut off the top part of the valve cover leaving the 4 sides to contain the oil within the heads. If you don't have the clips (highly recommended) you could use some paper towel pieces stuffed in the rockers (not really recommended, but will do in a pinch) to limit the oil squirting out of the push rods all over the engine and you.

If you're going the "hot and running" route, the rocker arm deflector clips like those shown in Bill's photo are the ones to use; the ones made of wire with the little "tit" that goes in the hole in the rocker arm SUCK. I've had my Bandimere deflector clips for about 40 years.
