Default How do you adjust the headlight assemblies??

Hi guys, I'm going crazy trying to adjust one of my headlight assemblies. I need to move it about an eighth to three sixteenth of an inch from the right to the left. I tried to shim it on the left side and it did help, but the assembly would slide back and forth. Does the pivot bearing slide on the shafts? My pivot bearing does not move or slide at all. Please help. My body man wants to quit on the car. Please help! Thanks. John.

Does the pivit ***** slide on the shafts?
Yep, most likely frozen from rust. Set collars on the outboard ends of the shafts determine position.

I see complete disassembly in your future.

Thanks for responding. I just got off the phone with the body shop owner and he will try to free them up tomorrow. This is the last step before the car gets painted and this is holding them up. He told me that if he cannot get them adjusted, he wants someone else to paint it. Hopefully he can free them up. Thanks. John.

Once they are free, loosen the collar on the out board end and the stop yoke on the inboard end. Place some small wood wedges in the gaps to position the bucket, then move the collars in and tighten them up.

If you pivot shaft does not rotate in the ball I would correct this before you paint the car. This is not a difficult repair just a little time consuming. You are surely spending a great deal of money to paint your baby why not spend about 250 dollars more to rebuild your headlight buckets. This will allow both headlights to open and close freely and it looks so cool when both buckets open like they are on one shaft. Do it once do it right.. Dave

Trophy Blue,
besides, it sounds like your painter is a bit stressed. If he has painted these cars before, he should already know that many of these buckets can be a pain in the a... If they haven't been R&R before, the old steel bearings (*****) are usely frozen, rusted up, among other things, as said above, should be rebuilt.
By reading your post above, it just sounds like to me, your painter needs some time off anyway. If you want the best paint job you can get, the last thing you want is a painter stressed over frozen *****.

Craig

BTW as said below, you can just remove them from the car, strip the end shafts, collars, nylon pieces, etc out, then clean the buckets and have em painted off the car. You get a better job this way too. Just 2 cents.

Just take them off and have them painted off the car. Thats what I just did. I repaired the gears and stop switches while I had them off.

Thanks guys. I called my painter back and he was going to try to free up the ball and if that did not work, he would stop working on the car. It's been in his shop for almost a year and he's getting tired of working on it. I had rebuilt the passenger side one and replaced both of the limit switches. The assembly that is giving us trouble, is the one that I had purchased from a guy that had rebuilt it. Who knows. I think that it might be time to put the project aside for awhile. We will see. Thanks again. John.

After many hours, I finally got the headlight assemblies fitted in perfectly. Now, all that I have to do is to install the motors and attach the wires. I'm a happy camper for now!!
