Default C1 Carburetor Help

A friend of mine had an old Rochester carburetor setting in his garage. He said it came from a '62 chevy. I thought -Bubba, you can use this carburetor on your car -go ahead and rebuild it!!! Now, the carb (rebuuilt) sets on the engine and I noticed...the linkage appears to operate with a 'push' mechanism -toward the radiator. And, from what I see from the AIM pages and my gas pedal mechanism, I should have a 'pull' mechanism or operation to open the butterfly's-??? OK, I admit it...I'm trying to make it work...question is...can it? Again, in advance your help is appreciated.

You may have it hooked below the correct slot- it should pull back toward the firewall. I assume it is a 4 Jet?

First, thanks to everyone who replied to the aluminum bell housing question. I found and purchased a '553 before I heard about a '591 source -it arrived today. Second, the carburetor I have is for a later model GM that used the 'cam' or 'z-bar' mechanism to counter the pull motion from the exterior (firewall) gas lever. Out of frustration and the 'larger-then-life' Bubba sign that kept blinking over my head, I purchased a new Holley 600cfm --it's on it's way. Again, thank you so much for the input. Maybe we'll get her started NEXT week -after all the days I've wasted during this week's vacation.
