I installed the red top Optima battery in May this year. Getting ready to pack things up for the winter here in the Detroit suburbs. Will I have to trickle charge the Optima if I leave it in over the winter?
It is a good idea to keep any battery on a maintenance charger whenever it is to sit idle for a long period of time. Luckily, we live in a part of the country where we don't put our cars away for the winter, so we don't have that sort of problem.
I have a red top in my 67. IMO, If you disconnect one battery cable, it will stay charged for the winter, they have a long shelf life. Go to thier website for info...
IMO - If you want to leave a charger on it, I have used the Battery Tender Plus by Deltran. I have on one one on another car that sits forever and is driven occasionally with a ten year old battery in it and the battery is still in perfect working order thanks to this unit. it charges at 1.25 amps then goes into "storage mode" it does not over charge the battery....
I don't own a battery charger. My optima has a green **** switch, which I use to reconnect it every 3-4 weeks to run the engine for 40-50 minutes. It's also a good idea to run the A-C compressor (if so equipped) for 5-10 minutes whenever you run the car.
