Roy,
You are making this look too easy. One thing I now now about doing a body-off resto. It takes 3 people, 1 to operate the lift, 1 to guide the body, and 1 to take pictures. I feel like I've been standing in your driveway watching you! Thanks for all the pix, they are much appreciated.

Roy,
Awesome job, you are doing what I'll be doing over the next months. Just got started this month on my body off resto of the rolling chassis.
Thanks for the pics, you do nice work!

Engine & Keisler 5-speed Installed (with Pic's)
Tonight my friend Mike came over and we got the engine and new Keisler TKO-600 5-speed installed (thanks Mike). I had to shim the rear motor mount 3/32" so the rear transmission housing would clear the cross-member. I will be curious to see how the clearances are after I get the body back on. Dialing-in the bell housing was a real pain. I had to use .007" offset dowel pins and even with that it took a lot of adjusting to get the total runout within .005". I can imagine how hard this would have been working under the car. With the body off it was pretty easy.

I've been following your thread since the start of the body off. Thanks for the pictures and great updates along the way. I really do feel like I'm there watching all the progress. Your car is awesome!

I pushed the chassis aside today and started looking at the body. The first thing I noticed during my inspection was some crud hanging out of the front cowl drain holes. I started working at it with a wire and was shocked at what came out. This should make a huge difference in how wet my carpets get in the rain.

I had some pretty bad carbon buildup on the back of my intake valves due to sucking oil through the intake gasket. I pulled the heads and took them to a machine shop today. They are going to dissassemble the heads, clean & reface the valves, boil the heads, remove all carbon & install a positive sealing valve seal (has umbrella seals now). Price is going to be $125 to $150.

awesome pics
also, love the web cam. great job, you have wayyyyy more patience than i do. wish i could do same thing. everytime my car goes on a lift for work i always spend some time with rust converter going over every spot i can. usually fumigate the inside of the frame through those small holes in the frame. i have spent a bunch on those cans of rust converter. but cheaper than pulling body off. and it is up on lift anyway. one thing i did as well was use shop vac with small attachment to suck all the junk out of frame. amazing the amount of small stuff that gets in there. my mechanic hated me after about 30 minutes, but hey, gotta keep your frame clean.

Gary Ramadei (forum member grt1999) is rebuilding my steering box. I should have it back later this week. Here are some of the pictures he has sent me. It sure looks better compared to what I sent him.

Steering box is finished
Just got an email from Gary and the steering box is finished. I should have it back in a few days. Here are a few pic's of the finished product.

I did not have a lot of time to work on it this weekend, but I did get a few things done. Pulled the wiring harness from the front end along with the grille and the grille mounting brackets. Whoever worked on this prior to me took a lot of shortcuts. The grille mounting brackets were not held on with rivets. They had round machine screws (that were too small) without washers and were barely secure (I am replacing the brackets and using rivets). I even found a few metric bolts on the support brackets and there were no rubber bushings on the headlight motor support brackets (one bracket was not even connected). I also removed the radiator core support which I will sand blast and paint with POR-15.

Steering Box is Back from Rebuild
My steering box came back from rebuild by Gary Ramadei (forum member gtr1999). He returned it with complete documentation of his work process, condition of the parts and spec's he set everything to, along with installation instructions. His communication during the rebuild process is excellent and he made a followup call to me today after I received it (I don't believe you will get these personal touches from some of the big name rebuilders). Thanks Gary.

Got my heads back from the machine shop today and they look new again. All the black gooey carbon is gone (from sucking oil throught the intake). While they were apart I had them touch up the valve faces & seats. They also machined the valve guides to install positive sealing valve seals instead of the standard umbrella seals. I'll get them installed this weekend and paint the upper half of the engine.

Today I got the heads installed along with the exhaust manifolds and side pipes. Still need to adjust the valves and install the intake manifold and carbs. After that I think the rolling chassis is pretty much complete. Now I can concentrate on the body wiring, etc. I also sand blasted the radiator core support. It would not fit in my blast cabinet so I borrowed a portable sand blast machine and did it outside. That sure was a mess and it really went through the blast media. FYI, 94 labor hours as of today.
