Default Someone run these engine codes?

Dad's '56.
Engine that came with car when he bought it in 1980 needs replacing. He could hire out for mosquito fogging.

He wants me to rebuild a '56 265 from a '56 Nomad I bought for him a zillion years ago. Don't ask about the 265.

Question is about the engine currently in the car. Has road draft tube.

Left hand aft pad: 38334810 Might start with an 8, tough to read.

Right front stamping: T0806GF No question, very clear to read.

I defer to your decoding magnificence.

I think you have an extra 3 in the casting #

3834810 is a 62-66 283

T0806 is Tonawanda Aug 6th

GF is 283/195 PG fullsize car. It is the only GF code used from 62-66

T- Tonawanda, NY Build Plant
O806-806th motor built
GF-265 CI 8 Cylinder 3-Speed Air-Conditioning
GF code is very rear indeed! It is sometimes very hard to tell F's and E's.
GE in more common.
GE-265 CI 8 Cylinder 3-Speed with Overdrive-Dual Exhaust-4BC
Hope this helps.

Default Numbers Please!

Just went back to your post. To be a '56 265 casting would be 3720991

3834810 isn't a 56 casting # All 265 casting #'s start with 37

If it was a 56 it would be 3720991 casting #

That is not the correct way to break down the assembly date/suffix.

I misunderstood his post as I thought he was talking about a '56 265. On '56 V8's the date code is cast in the block, just to the rear of the passenger's side cylinder head. Duntov-097 you are correct! If it were a '56 the casting would 3720991 and the engine stamping would look like this example 0001050F56GC The 50th passenger car, engine built at Flint MI,1956 Year Model, 265, 8Cyl,3-Speed with Overdrive.

Black60, Sorry if I confused, or misquoted any data as I slipped back into my tr-five days.

Duntov-097, I have always wondered why the Duntov Green Stripe is cast 098 and referred to as 097?

I misunderstood it before I understood it as well.

097 was the end of the part # and 098 the casting #

You guys are the best. Now I think I'll go look at the nasty alleged '56 Nomad motor sitting in the engine stand and compare the casting numbers to what you stated.

By the way, this little 265 supposedly was pulled from the Nomad and stuck in a shed. The intake/carb and valve covers are missing but eveything else is intact. The exhaust manifolds with heat riser, water pump with four bladed fan and pulley, harmonic balancer, generator "U" shaped bracket is still on the L/H manifold, pan, road draft tube and forty pounds of oily crud.

If you guys know a Nomad restorer who may be interested in checking this out send him my way. The exhaust manifolds are unusual to me anyways. When I strip the engine I'll photograph and record the details such as bolt head orientation, part numbers and bracketry.
Apparently, 20 years in the NCRS has caused me permanent damage.

Default The 265's numbers

Big and Duntov:

I zipped home and checked the 265 and sure enough the casting numbers are 3720991. I'm pretty happy about that because it reinforces what the seller told me, that it was out of a 56.

The stamp pad says: 0533192F56G. Clear as can be.

So I guess it is a Flint motor 533,192 built in '56. Not sure what the G means. I hate to overstay my welcome but if you guys could decode the last bit I'd be grateful.

My 15 year old daughter and I will put it on the rotating engine stand tonight and begin the tear down.

Best Regards,

Black60

In a 56 Chevy, I got a G as a 265 with 3 speed.

Default Numbers Please!

Total car production for 1956 was 1,574,819 with Nomads representing 7,886 units. 1956 starting unit number :0001001 and up at each plant, 6 and 8 cylinders are numbered separately. The single G is a 265 CI 8 Cyl with a 3-Speed Tansmission. What happend to the Nomad? They are very popular also.

Big:
No idea what happened to the Nomad. They are mega buck items around here as well.

Again, thank you for the time you spent.
