Hi, I just purchased a 327 engine and the owner didn't know what it was from but I believe it may be from a 66 'vette. Here are the stamping numbers:
Rear engine block (near bellhousing): 3858174
Pad in front of passenger head: FO7II2AS
Heads, under valve cover: 3890462 & F276 & GM15
I would GREATLY appreciate anything you can contribute to helping me decode this engine. I have my fingers crossed that it's something I can use for my first rebuild. Thanks in advance! Malo
174 casting pegs it to a late 66, don't know about the AS suffix, but the F tells you it was assembled in Flint where all Vette motors were put together.
FYI, it would not be a Corvette engine with an AS- according to Noland, all 66 327's started with a H or a K, not an A. Most had 461 heads, but 462's showed up late in the production year.
The extra digit makes it a plant stamping error or a restamp error maybe? If the engiine looks like it is original, not decked or bored, it may have been a GM production error.

Don
The tool that GM used to "stamp" only held 7 characters or numbers.
The only 60's Flint engines I've seen with odd 3-digit suffixes were marine engines (Mercury Marine, Crusader, etc.); that's probably where that one began its life. With a very few rare exceptions, there were no 3-digit suffixes until 1970.

The "SB" suffix was used on '62-'64 327/300hp in full-size cars; the VIN derivative stamping on that one says it's from a '62. What's the block casting number (U.S. driver's side rear flange) and the casting date (about 5" toward the U.S. passenger side from the distributor)?

Pretty unusual to find a 62-64 low hp (250 / 300 hp) engine in a passenger car with a VIN derivative on it.
I recently helped a friend sell a 64 Impala with a 327 / 250 hp engine, full option car (S suffix code). The pad did not have a VIN derivative.
Perhaps this varied from assembly plant to assembly plant as the VIN derivatives were phased in throughout the 60s.

Need a picture of this engine pad. The image of the pencil tracing is not showing up.

The full size Chevy assembly plants were directed to stamp the VIN derivitive on the blocks of 300hp and above. The directive began with the '62 model year.
