The owner, Thomas Dorley, who is a hunter, said he had 40 pounds of black powder in a room that apparently exploded.
I found this on the web
Detective Cindy Campina of the state fire marshal's office said the ammunition did not start the fire.
"The homeowner was stripping the doors inside his house -- old varnish on the doors," Campina said. "He was using paint thinner to do that which is what you use to do that. He had a halogen lamp to light his work and according to what he told me he had been doing it all day long almost to right up when the fire started."
Dorley said the fire destroyed his new Corvette as well.
"I've lived here 30 years and the Corvette has been here a week," Dorley said.
The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"Here, hold my beer" For Civil War reenacting. I roll my own authentic cartridges and drop 75 grains FF black powder into each. When I first started, had a guy tell me, "Don't smoke while you're rolling cartridges" I was afraid to ask if that wisdom was from personal experience
I think you can buy 50lbs of black powder, without a FFl license.

How would a guy go about being part of a civil war reenactment?
I live in SD, but it would be fun to to spend a weekend doing that.
There should be an organization in your area, even in SD. You should join up with one and learn the ropes. Most organizations will take you in and help you with clothing etc. to get you started.

Thanks, their is a group that does a Lewis and Clark adventure every summer, where a replica boat goes up and down the Missouri river.
