Default engine lift method

Hi,

Will be removing a 327 with alum. manifold. Ok to pick up engine and trans using one of those carb. area mounting plates?

or best place to attach to lift the assembly?

thanks

I just did that last weekend only I was putting my engine and tranny back into it's bare chassis. The intake was a 65 GM aluminum intake. Make sure you're nuts to the plate are tight. I have seen, I believe John Hinckley had photos of lifting a BB and tranny this way. It worked great for me. It does look spooky at first. Go slow and be darn certain everything is disconnected and clear on the way out. DG

You could do it that way and will probably be OK....but to me the $25 for a tilter and the peace of mind in using larger bolts/threads on the heads is more than worth the extra cost.

Plus - the tilter will give you additional control.

Default Engine lift

Brian is correct, an engine tilter is a good tool to have. If you don't have one you should have several holes in the engine plate that you can move to to get the right angle. Make sure all threads are in GOOD condition before you lift the weight. I have installed 454 engines and trans and 460 engines and trans with the lifting plate, it works great.
Thanks,
Wade

I used the carb plate on an aluminum maniford to put my engine in. I was very sceptical about it, but it held fine. Make sure you have everthing ready to go and it should work fine. I don't think I would use it on a big block.

Harbor Freight has 2 ton tilters on sale for $19. Not bad but the turning threads feel like cr*p!

I made the mistake of buying one of those cheap ones, and it was a mother to tilt, then the handle broke off.

then I invested in a good one from Matco for $65.00 and it made it a lot easier.

it's probably lifted a close to 100 motors, everyone I know is glad I bought it.

I have used both methods to install an engine and trans into cars and have a tip. If you're using a carb plate with an aluminum manifold, USE STUDS in the manifold to keep from stripping the threads. As a matter of fact, anytime you are threading bolts into aluminum, you are far better off using studs with lock washers and nuts as aluminum is far too soft and easy to strip threads. As far as using a tilter, I have used it and find it to be the more acceptable method when installing an engine/tranny combo.

I greased the threads on my tilter, removed the handle and used and impact or a ratchet. They eliminate tons of headache removing engine and trans together.

I agree ... if I knew the Matco was only $46 more I would have bought one myself. Although adequate, the Harbor Freight levelor is very hard to turn when it's off center!

Hey geo65,

Hope this thread worked for you ... if so, I'm sure you made sure you're nuts were tight .

Sorry for my rare bit of goofy humor here ... could not resist the temptation of the vettnut post .

My apologies to you, but I'm still laughing .

Best Regards, and Merry Christmas ...

Pete .
