Default Rotella 15-40: new formula out

if you're a Rotella 15-40 user, be advised the new formula is showing up on the shelves at Auto Zone, Wal-mart, etc..... (if you want to stock up on the old, you'd better get to it)

Is the packaging different, so you can tell the new from the old?

Thanks, Ralph.

yup...... the new has a "Triple Protection" logo in yellow/red/orange? on the front (overall a bit more colorful label as well, still in same white jug)...... also the rating has changed meeting the new requirements :-( (lower zinc, etc, etc).

the $64,000 question is: is the new formulation still going to be better than regular oils?

Supposedly it has significantly less zinc additive, which is important to us old flat tappet guys. But the Oil Guy will be consulted.

According to the API site the new rated CJ-4 ( new Rotella) was developed to meet the 2007 diesal emission standard with the use of lowsulfur diesal fuel. CJ-4 will have less zinc compounds although they dont mention how much.

Just got back from my local Walmart and they only had the new stuff on the shelf. I went over to the neighboring Checkers and got all I wanted. So, I'm good for about 5 years.

Hopefully this earlier post covers it.

And I had just switched over too, after reading all the posts from others.

I stopped at an Advance auto yesterday to see what they had. They already have in the new stuff with the different color label and 3 stage protection ID. They did have a few of the old gallons left for $9.50 a gallon.

If you are wanting to get Industrial Diesel oil in it's older formulation
and are not brand stuck on Rotella.
1. Chevron Delo
2. Mobil Delvac
3. Mystik
4. Or the house brands of Caterpillar and Cummins should offer the
zinc you are looking for....

I used Cummins Premium Blue Oil in my old Mercedes 240 diesel....
since the local Engine houses normally don't do a huge volume of
oil sales, you might find some gallon jugs of the older formula that
Cat and Cummins houses have been unable to sell.... you might hit a mother load of
old formula there.

As long as the API rating is "CI-4 or CI-4 + whatever brand you use will do. Its the CI-4 rating and viscosity selection that counts. The local Auto Zone was selling Castrol Techaire 15-40 for $6/gallon last week.
