I think this absolutly defines the "Lets be perfectly true to original" even if the car is a knicknack idea so prevelant in NCRS or Bloomington circles. Wonder if 1963 air is still available?

Well, no hold on there. I am an NCRS member but I don't see anyone bidding on these tires. Why not re-title it "more eBay silliness"? I bought a set of original take-offs for my 72 but I paid under $300 for four tires and original wheels - delivered from FL to PA. Plus, I don't drive on them. Who in their right mind would drive on 33+ year old rubber?
So I guess I'll step into this one and throw in my 2 cents as well with some rambling thoughts.
Who knows what drives each person restoring a car to NCRS specs. Some strive to get a top flight, others strive to get as close to a perfect score as possible. I was just trying to get a top flight and wasn't concerned with getting 100%. Unfortunately I bailed out of NCRS judging after the way I was treated at my very first event, many many years ago, so a second flight was the highest my 62 managed.
Modern day reproduction tires do not get full credit for the older cars because they have the DOT numbers on them.
Something else to consider - in this day and age there are folks with far more money than brains. Some of them pay "whatever it takes" to get classic cars restored. I can see a case where restoration shops of lessor business morals would pony up and buy these pricey tires and simply roll the cost on to the customer of the car they are building, without first asking the customer if they want to spend an extra $7000 for just a few more originality points.
Then again this seller probably knows that BJ is coming up and now is the time people are panicking to get their cars to the highest quality possible in time for the auction silliness that is about to take place in Arizona.
The guy is obviously trolling for a sucker who's willing to spend $8000 for a set of on-and-off-the-trailer tires to pick up seven points (out of 4500, the difference between good repro tires and original tires), when you can lose up to 270 points and still Top Flight the car. Who knows - he may just find one.

This is called points-chasing: this will be the same person who loses a ton of points in the operations check because his windshield wipers don't work and he's never checked them. You can do very well in flight judging without getting this crazy ...
i was wondering why he didn;t have a reserve or buy it now mabey he figures someone may acutally bid on them, with computers now people ask crazy prices for junk and someone always bids on them they say don;t throw out anything someone needs it
It's all relative. There are many many people out there who think all of us are crazy to pay 10-20 times what the car sold for brand new 40 plus years later, and even more still for ones that do not have some modern updates (IE a car with poly bushings and upgraded suspension would be worth less than a car with original items in many Vette enthusiasts minds). I could have bought a new 64-67 repro glovebox door for a third of what I paid or the correct 63 unit, but I like the look of the 63, and it's my friggin money. So if some guy with more money than he knows what to do with wants to get every point possible, this would seem like a no brainer to him. I also consider it a no brainer (as in, "you must have lost your mind to pay that for tires", but that's just my opinion!)
