Default headlight bucket

Can someone that has removed the headlight buckets tell me how the pivot ***** on the headlight bucket are attached to the shaft and how I might remove them without damaging them?

I have the bucket out and on the bench. I have removed the set screw in the adjustment collar, the ***** themselves are in pretty good shape but they are not slipping off (assuming that is how they are to come off).

How do I get these off without damageing them?

Thanks,
Chuck

There is an allen head screw on the outboard collar piece. MIne were so covered in dust, rust, and dirt that i couldnt even see the allen head screws and I had to consult this forum just to figure out how the collars were attached. The ball assemblies were also stuck on my headlight shafts and i had to actually clasp the ***** in my vise and then yank on the headlight assemblies to get them to slide off. Good luck!

Do the ***** rotate freely? If not they are frozen and most likely junk. The ***** have a brass sleve that should slide freely on the steel shaft that is attached to the headlight bucket. If the ***** are frozen, try to free them by soaking in penetrating oil, if that does not work, they are junk. If junk, put them into a vice lock them in and start twisting. They ***** are pretty cheap, in the long run it has been my experience that they are better to replace than to use ones that have been frozen.

I reused mine after blasting and coating with grease. I hope they are ok, but perhaps i should replace them before i put the car completely back together.

Thanks for the info!! (and photos)

The collar set-screw came out fine, there is not much dirt and grime and rust.

I will attempt to free them up and slide them off since that is how they are suppose to come off.

Based on comments so far, it probably will be a lost cause, but I will give it a go and see what happens.

Thanks again,
Chuck

Chuck, I loosely placed the end of the shaft in a vise and carefully tapped it with a rubber mallet and it came off ok.

Default Pivots

I soaked the pivot shafts for a few days with Blaster. I kept turning them over to soak from the top and the bottom. Be careful and use a rubber mallet as mentioned above. The shafts are cast and it is easy to snap them if using a heavy hammer. If all else fails, saw the pivots off with a sharp hacksaw and saw very carefully through the bushing without cutting into the shaft. Jerry
