Probably the gear, possible cable, most likely not the tach, I would remove the dash as a last resort. Look online at Corvette America and they show how the gear fits and you can figure if you want to go the rebuild route. I changed mine to a new GM type with the coil in the cap tach drive from Hot Rods USA.

If the noise is coming from inside the tach, it has to come out for a rebuild, and you'll need to pull the cluster to remove the tach (it's mounted on the same plate with the speedo). Forum member Jason Oliver (vetteinstruments@aol.com) can handle the rebuild for you.

Could just be the cable needs replace or lubed. Might want to unhook from distributor and put the end in a 3/8" drill. Believe the drill needs to be in reverse for the tach to come up correctly. Quick test though to where the noise is coming from. If noise still occurs, could disconnect from tach to verify it's the cable or tach.
