Check with Virginia Vettes, their website claims that if you send in your door posts they will send back rechromed ones for $160 each. Minor pitting on your cores is ok. I've not done this but maybe someone on the forum has. It's worth a call to them to find out the particulars.
The major reason they are high as compared to bumpers is that they are made of pot metal, not steel. It takes a lot more work and time to prep pot metal parts to make sure they don't have issues when they come out of the tanks.
Many platers will not touch them for that reason since they can't guarantee you'll be happy with the results.
If yours are badly pitted, you should try to find new cores that are pit free or that may have a few minor pits. All of this is also true for the curved windshield posts which are pot metal as well.
Be careful when trading them as there are differences between the years so your wheatherstripping may not fit properly if you get some replacements from the earlier cars.

Has anyone heard of a vendor which rebuild the entire windshield frame (not just the tabs and rechroming the post) including adding new glass and weatherstripping?
