Default door lock question

I tried to post this but it went out as a reply to Mattyg92's interior door lock question . So Im trying again .
Anyway , my door locks wont unlock with the key and I'm thinking they were swapped left to right when the car was painted . I've got the door panels removed and now is the time to fix the problem . So, which was does the tap on the cylinder face ? Currently they both face toward the rear of the car . My thought is if they were reversed during painting then maybe the linkage is mis aligned just enough that the cylinder tab doesnt quite move far enough to unlock the door ???? The key will lock the doors but just wont unlock them .

My ride :

they point forward, that way they will interlock with the metal retainer that slides on from inside the door.

Let me know if u need a pic as i just got done taking my whole lock mechanism apart.

I had the same problem until I used the ignition key instead of the glove box key. Problem solved.

Similar problem with mine. I flushed them with WD-40, and they worked fine. Mine must have been just an accumulation of crud (like you might get in a body shop?). May be of some help?

Default locks

Mine are both facing toward the rear . The key works fine going in and turning to lock the door but it turns to unlock the door and wont move the actuator rod enough to unlock it . I'll try and swap them out so the tap points forward and see what happens . I looked at a parts catalog today and it showed the tab facing forward . Ill give it a try and see what happens . Thanks for the input .

1Redctoo, here is a picture of the lock assembly for the right hand door (acutally a 66 roadster too). The original lock assembly was in exactly this same position as shown pointing forward.

Default door locks, still a problem

Gonefishn - thanks for the pic , I'm finally getting around to putting things back together . Your pic helped me figure something else out . I found the backing support plates for the door handles lying at the bottom of my doors ! didn't know where they went till I saw your picture .
Now I have the tab facing forward but still now luck , seems like the linkage is binding up now . Do you have a picture that shows the lower section of the linkage ?

gcb1966 - Thanks also , any more pics would be appreciated

Default locks cont .

Another question , this is awful simple but , when you stick your key in the lock are the teeth on the key facing up or down ? I'm getting the feeling Bubba mixed up all the parts so I don't know what goes with what .

After I get these locks figured out I can put my door panels back on and start to reinstall my radio . I had it rebuilt and it sounded really good in the guys shop . I know its not going to be great but heck all it did before was buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .

Down on every classic GM car I own from the 50's to 70's, including the 65 vette.

On the 65 Driver's door, I insert the key and turn it to the left to unlock.

On the 65 Passenger's door, I insert the key and turn it to the right to unlock.

Anyway , I'll probably be running back and forth from here to the garage for awhile trying to figure this thing out if anybody else want to chime in I'll be happy to hear from you .

Sorry, I do not have any pictures of the lower section.

One thing I'd like to point out if your not all done. The metal reinforcement plate has black pliable materila behind it. Believe this it to allow contour to the door curves. The 3M black strip caulk is a good match to the material. Can also be used behind the door panels on areas over select screws as the factory did.

Just wanted to share that since your reinforcements had fallen off and you may not have been aware.

Why lock a rag top? I never lock mine, figure if someone wants to take her for a ride that bad, they will just poke through the top (if it's ever up) and be gone.
