OK , one more door question . I didn't take a pic of the windwing crank handle position before I pulled em off . Are they positioned up,down, forward or aft , with the windwing closed ?? Does it matter ?
I can't answer your question from an NCRS perspective, but I find on my 65 when the window is all the way down, the window crank is positioned just such that my left knee rubs on the **** when I want to lay my left leg aside for rest. I hate hitting this **** with my knee so I crank the window up just a hair so I don't have this problem.
So if you decide to put it on any old way, keep in mind where your legs might be when you are in the car.
I put the handle on without the clip and run the window all the way up and all the way down. If it hits my knee, I adjust it until it doesn't in both positions.
Mike , I should have read your reply first . I looked at a pic and put it on like it looked . unfortunately there is some play in the gearing and now after cranking them a couple of times the left and right are at total opposite sides , with the clips in . Im to bummed now to remove the clips, gonna go have a beer !

If I remember correctly, back in the day we installed the handles on the driver's side with the windows closed and the crank pointing to the 4:00 position. On the passenger side it was to the 8:00 position. This was for the vent and window crank.

I had asked the same question here, and about 3 months later, saw the same question on the NCRS board.
Each place stated there was not any specific "rule" for the placement. A great response on CF was to position the window crank such that when the window is up vibration from driving will not open the window.
Nolad Adam's book (63-67) showed what was stated as original door panels and the window crank was positioned as stated above (between 7:00 - 11:00).
Isn't proof, if there was a rule, but probably correct.
This is what I ending up using too. Put mine at ~8:00 o-clock.
I don't know if there is a "correct way" but whatever worked when the cars were new can be disregarded now with all the slop in the old used window regularors. That is, unless you don't mind banging your knee on the crank handle(s).
If you drive it, you will find that the best position is at 3 and 9 oclock with the windows up - 3 on one side and 9 on the other - so that the weight of the handle being pulled down by gravity (and road jarring) is trying to close the window.
Otherwise - as you drive with the windows closed with heat or A-C running - the window creeps down enough to cause wind noise and suck the heat or A-C out of the cabin.
