Default steering ratio

Is the rear hole the quick ratio position? My manual says so, but a post recently said, my tie rods are in the rear hole, so it's not in the quick ratio position. Forgot who's thread it was, but anyway, which position is generally prefered, and what's the real difference between the two?

Rear hole is for easier turning without power assist but more turns lock to lock. Front is for use with power assist less turns.

Choose which you prefer. I have mine in the front hole (quick steering), no power assist, and a smaller diameter steering wheel. Excellent workout for your biceps. It's a bear to steer at low speed. Sitting still -- forget it!

If you have power steering, DO NOT use the rear (standard manual steering) hole position - you can over-travel the power cylinder and damage it; that's why the factory put the big aluminum rivet plugs in the rear holes on power steering cars, so you couldn't use the rear hole.

Front hole(quick steering)? My manual says rear hole is quick ratio. Hmmmm. By the way I do have manual steering, and am using the rear hole. I'll just leave it. Thanks guys.

Think of it this way:

Rear hole = more leverage (just like a longer wrench), so easier to steer.

Front hole = quicker (since it does not need to travel as far for the same angular movement).
