Default Engine Support on Rolling Chassis

Hello All,

I’ll be installing my engine this weekend and have a really dumb question. The body is off the car and I would like to drop the motor on my rolling chassis and then install the clutch. My dumb question is do I need to support the motor underneath until I install the transmission? I would hate for it fall back or support it underneath in the wrong area and mess up the rear seal or oil pan.

Thanks,
Eddie

Is the tranny not ready to bolt up yet? If it is, I would bolt up your clutch & bellhousing, then install the tranny all as one unit. Once you have it all together, install it to the frame.

If not, then you could install the motor, but I think you may want to block up the rear of it for support, just to relieve some of the pressure on the motor mounts.

I would help to know the year, but yeah, it will take a lot of stress off the mounts if you block up the rear of the engine. A 2X4 under the oil pan with a bottle nose jack or a 2X4 between the jack and flywheel will do.

You might get away with a short block hanging from the two side mounts only, but a full engine is going to slowly tear those rubber mounts apart, and then fall on the floor.

You can probably fashion a bar across the frame rails that bolts to the bellhousing to hold the back if you are looking for a way to keep the chassis mobile.

Answer to not so dumb question: Yes.

With just the side mounts supporting the engine I bet you would tear the motor mounts or bend the frame brackets. The front mounts are well forward of the engine center of gravity. Bottom of engine will end up resting on the steering relay rod.
