Default 67 Replacement Engine Questions

My Dad and I have been talking more and more about reviving his '67 vert. It originally had a 427 but currently has a small block.

My questions are about replacement engines. We are looking to put a big block back into it. Please bare with me if you think my questions are stupid, I am a newb. when it comes to vettes.

Will any 427 big block be a direct bolt in? Could we go bigger and it still be a direct bolt in (i.e. 454, 502)?
What do we need to look for to make sure the engine will fit with out any modifications.
A friend of ours is selling a complete 427 engine out of a 69 Camaro. Would this fit in the vette? How can we check?
Are there any good crate engine builders out there besides GM Performance? Could you recommend some?

Thanks in advance.

Any GM BBC or aftermarket 9.8 standard deck motor is the same physical outside dimensions. The tall deck BBC is about 5/8 of an inch taller tho. So yes 396 and 502 are the same externally and will fit in your vette. There are many aftermarket crate vendors, Bill Mitchell is always a good choice. Big HP crates are spendy and can be built in most cases for several grand less. But turnkey with a 2 year warranty is also nice... Even the GM 572 will fit, but will be 5/8 inch taller. Of course your induction system also dictates your installed height....

I just remembered that my Dad has power brakes on his vette, will it matter which heads we run or will I just have to get the cylinder head covers with the dent in the drivers side cover.

If you use the tall deck (.4 of an inch higher) you may run into problems with the valve covers (dented or not dented) hitting the power booster.

Get the casting numbers off the back (your friends) of the block and then look here to see if it is a tall block.

http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

If it says 427T, it is the tall block. Which you do not want on your first big block.

P.S. You can go as big as 565 without using a tall block. Any bigger than a 4.25 stroke and you get into a rod length problem.
