Default 61 project started

All right, here’s what I’m doing to my 61 non-original engine and transmission, nice driver Vette. The frame in my car is perfect, so I ruled out going with a full frame replacement. I have already ordered a Jim Myers front end, with his power front disk brakes. I am putting rear disks on as well (ordered from ECI conversions). Also, I am putting a
LS1 engine in place of an incorrect 327 engine, using a Myers engine mount kit. I decided to keep the M20 Transmission, because it shifted so nicely and cost of the 5 speed (I can always change it later). The posi rear has a 336 ratio so it cruses nicely at 55 MPH anyway.

What I would like is a source, other the S&P, for the engine brackets? Their stuff is too shiny, and costly for me.
Which headers works best?
Also, I would like to hear from people who have installed a LS engine in a C1 with the stock frame.

Thanks to anyone who has any information, Dave

Default LS1 in a C1

I am installing a LS1 with a 4L60E trans in my 62. I like you didn't want to have to buy the high dolar brackets from S&P. I looked at a lot of vendors and anyone that I found that had brackets that would fit were billet and some of them were higher and I didn't want to spend all of my time under the hood polishing aluminum. So I bought the S&P ones.
You will need side mounts for the engine. I made my adapter mounts for the engine and bought a 700R4 rear trans mount from Bowtie overdrive. I have the Fatman power R&P with front disc brakes. I also am installing Airtique AC in mine.
I have a new aluminum radiator with a Cooling Component electric fan cause they have a shroud built in. It is very close between the MAF sensor and the radiator but I now have it figured out.
I have had the body on and off several times and now I have the chassic powder coated and the engine and trans painted also.
I installed the Tanks electric fuel pump in my original style tank using their adapter plate and now getting ready to run my supply and return line.
If you go to www.LS1tech.com and look in conversions and hybrids there is a lot of good information and knowledgeable people that will help you.
I am far from finishing mine but if I can help in any way just let me know.
Wade

Dave,
What LS1 are you using? Crate motor, F-body, Vette, truck? The reason I ask is the accessories mount in different places depending on the application. I used an F-body motor in my car (66 coupe) and used the Vette cast alum bracket to mount my p/s pump and alt. It mounts the alt on the pass side and at the top of the motor with the p/s pump right below it. I think it cost about $50-75. I had to space it away from the block .748" to align with the F-body crank pulley (the vette pulley is closer to the block). Are you going to run a/c? The stock location for the a/c compressor is on the driver side down low which will probably hit the frame or something else. I used a bracket from Alf Ebberoth of Performance Automotive (831-394-4403) in Calif to move it up top (you have to use a Sanden compressor, not the stock one). I think his bracket is around $500 but not sure, you may want to call and verify.

Nick

my58, I looked thru Alan Groves catalog and could find nothing for LS1's. Do you know something that isn't in his catalog?

I just got off the phone with Greg and they have nothing available for LS1's, don't have anything planned for LS1's and don't seem to think the market is big enough to justify the expense and R&D. He said they don't have a motor either. Since this motor has been out since 1997 and is one of the hottest updates for street rods, muscle cars and all generations of Vettes, I guess they know best. There you have it.

Hey Nick, Wade and Bill, I’m using an engine out of a camaro, new heads and a pretty aggressive cam. I not using any of the stock brackets, I don’t think any will fit anyway. I also called Greg yesterday and got the same answer. With all the phone calls about LS1’s, right now he’s probably thinking about adding some products to his catalogue. I did some looking around yesterday and found this, it looks good and not a bad price either. http://www.carshopinc.com/index.php/cPath/28_115

i'm sorry to hear Alan Grove can't provide the brackets you need; my experience with then was good, they went out of their way to help me with the brackets i needed.

Misfit1, Nick, and others,

Sorry about that. :o I thought I was steering you to a good resource. My experience was completely the opposite of yours. They custom modified some brackets I needed and were a pleasure to deal with.

Sorry again for the bum steer.
