I remember guys at a golf course cleaning copper irons in Coke overnight. Put a nice shine on the clubs without scratching them up. You may want to try that before using a more caustic chemical. You'll want something that will get into the weave of the strap and will be easy to wash out. Maybe CLR if the Coke comes up short?
I used Eagle One Etching Mag Cleaner on a fulie unit. Not only did the fulie come out great but the little copper hoses on the unit came out looking Brand New. I would definatly try this stuff.
Go to the hardware store and get some liquid flux in the electrical section. It will get down into the weave of the copper, clean it bright and shiny new, and without as much as a single scrub stroke. Neutralize the ( slightly acidic ) solution with a bath of baking soda and water, then rinse thoroughly.
