Removing a Steering Box from a 61 vette
I like to start that I'm a new member here. I already have removed my radiator out of the vette and I wanted to know if anyone has already removed there steering box out of there c1 vette before and have any tricks or tips on removing it. Also I got a link from someone about sending the steering box to www.corvettesteering.com I heard the people from this place have done good work. Any information would help.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. Removing the column is a piece of cake if you use the force.

I did it a very long time ago. Here's my hazy recollections.
The instructions in the ST-12 are good. It is helpful if you remove the LH exhaust manifold. Believe it's also helpful to remove the hood. You'll need a very good puller to get the pitman arm off. Forget if it comes off before or after you pull the box and column.
Put a radiator hose clamp around your VIN tag on the column. The spot wwelds are weak, and you do not want to lose that tag.
The box will leak despite your best efforts to seal it. Consider grease instead of 90 weight oil. I used both.

Whole column pulls out through the front of the car so you have to remove teh turn signal switch, steerign wheel etc.
Get an ST-12 manual if you don't have one.
Put plastic down on your seats and carpet in case gear lube runs out the top end of column when you have it inverted, pulling it out over the radiator support.
