gm transmission on left side number is 3884685,rt side 3925660, tailshaft 88b28. Just purchased 63 swc. reverse top far left. Lowest gear is bottom left, next lowest gear BOTTOM right ,highest gear = top right of shift pattern. Suspect 3 speed transmission with 4 speed shifter??? or faulty shifter with 4 speed?

Reason: correction
It's a Muncie 4-speed, and either the linkage or the shifter (or both) are screwed up. It SHOULD look like the photo below.
Thanks. It has indy embossed on the side of the shift lever. I plan on purchasing a new shifter before I remove the old one. What brand of shifter do you recommend? Dean

Indy is a name on a Hurst shifter, a very good one if not completely shot. Check it out and see if the rods etc are hooked up correctly.
Does it have the 2 bolt mounting for the shifter handle- you can change it to a repro Corvette style. The Indy is a short straight shift handle.
Thanks guys. Now I know it is a 1968 muncie 4spd. When it was on the lift for the oil change, the mechanic shimmed the transmission mount due to rubber mount deteriorated allowing linkage to contact frame. He thought that would fix problem. I never paid attention to connections on the shifter arms. I will get it back on a lift and verify. Concern now is : Are all 4 gears good. Or the rods bent/ shifter gates bad. Seems strange that it ended up with functional shift pattern as described. Previous owner info not available.
