Well, the motor in my 64 327 300 HP is all back together and just about ready to run. I just need to fill it up with coolant - how much does it hold? Also, I usually just buy 50/50 mix - does anybody know of any problems with doing this? Thanks.
According to the owners manual....19 quarts. Unless they are using some fancy distilled water in the 50/50 mix, I would use tap water. It is cheap where I live, only $1.20 per cubic yard. Just a coincidence, I got my water bill today...............honest.
I'd "first-fire" it with plain water, in case you have to deal with any leaks or dump the coolant to address a problem. Once you're done with cam break-in and leak-free, then dump the water and add the anti-freeze.

That is a great idea...never thought of that. I'll be using this method as I just replaced the heater core...thanks John...
Just one question, how long would I have before I would have to worry about it overheating or doing any damage? I mean I'm guessing plain water is going to heat faster than a 50/50 mix. I would probably run it for a good 10 minutes so everything is cycling through the make sure there are no leaks.
Good idea John. I didn't put water in first this time time and just started with no leaks, but I have in the past and then had to drain the coolant into buckets so not to waste it. I didn't put in a new sending unit but probably need one - I also replaced the water pump, radiator, hoses, and thermostat (180) and the gauge reads 220 but the hoses don't feel hot at all.

You can run it all day on plain water. Or all week. If you have a problem, it's not because you used water.
