On the photo of the rear center section below, where the numbers and big P are located, there is a code STAMPED in the same location on the opposite side.
There SHOULD be 2 letters and 2-4 numbers following the the 2 letters.
The 2 letters indicate the the gear ratio (and posi or non-posi). The 2-4 numbers indicate the month and day of the month that the rearend was ASSEMBLED (the cast code on the other side indicates when the molton iron was poured into the mold).
SOMETIMES, the stamped code is EXTREMELY difficult to see (the assmebly worker may have been to hung over from the night before to hit the stamp hard enough), or, there may not even be a stamped code. Nevertheless, that is where the stamped code should be located--------------------if it's even there.
It ABSOLUTELY could be an over the counter rear. Chevy continued to manufacture the drop out style center sections AT LEAST up into the mid-late 60s. I've been rebuilding these rears for about 40yrs and just recently, I worked on a rear with a 66 date. Remember, 64 was the last year for this style rear (in pass cars, 62 in Vettes) so for them to still be available from Chevy parts for a few years is realistic.
