Default Help with old head number

Hi all,

I pulled a head off an old spare engine I have had for my 61. It has been setting for about 40 years. Just curious what it is and what it may have been used on in the past.

8890462 B159 GM23

thanks

Joe

How's about a late 1966 and early 1967 Corvette head. Used for both 300 and 350hp engines.

The B159 throws me, unless it's from a full size 1969 model.

I also think the number 3890462 as I can't find 889......

B159 is probably Feb. 15, 1969

I was reading upside down in the dark...maybe B156. I know it is not 1969 because I have had the 61 and extra engines since fall of 1968.

Many thanks, I got the idea of what it is.

If the head DOES NOT have threaded accessory holes in the ends of the head, then it CANNOT be a 69-later head. That was the FIRST year for accessory holes in the ends of the heads. Yes, yes, yes, I know, some 58-59 heads on full size Chevy pass cars with the factory air suspension as well as some big trucks with compressors for air brakes had threaded holes in the ends of the heads--------------------but those are rare exceptions.

That's OK. I don't have any info in my books after 60 as most of my stuff is for 58-60. I was just giving you an idea of how the numbers read to help you out. Mark

Joe, thanks for re-reading the date code, now it makes sense.

Cheers
