Default C1 Door Posts

Received my door posts won off an ebay auction and upon examination noticed that they were different (not surprising). Both have the serrated edges but the numbers don't even come close to what the 61 assembly manual shows as 3762557LH and 3762558RH. These are numbered 3754011LH and 3723248RH. One has a larger opening at the top where the weatherstrip ends. Question is what do I have? They were advertised as 58-62 and of course I didn't do my homework or ask the seller what the numbers were (lesson learned!). If anyone can decipher the numbers I would appreciate it as these will go back on ebay soon.

There are three different design posts, 56 then 57 to 60 then 61 to 62, sounds like 57 to 60 with ribs

The numbers on the posts are CASTING numbers; the numbers in the AIM are the PART number for the complete post assembly as received at St. Louis.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me where I could find what the correct casting numbers should be per year? The 61-62 Judging Guide says "Majority of 1961 door window posts had serrated front edges; 1961 above approximate serial 9,000 used smooth window posts, continuing through the end of 1962". I'm not looking to have my car judged, just want to put the right style on.

Thanks,
Mike

If the posts you received are correct for a 1960, and you decide to change them out, I would be interested in talking to you. I am looking for 60 posts. Thanks, Jim
Just send me a PM.

Shoot a PM to "1955Copper" (Roy Braatz) - he has the details on the differences.

Mike,

The 60 style posts were used for most of 61. Don't sweat it if yours are 59-60 style. I am glad to see you back to work on the car again!
How's life treating you out there, you going to have the car on the road by Carlisle? I am sure going to try and come this year. I hope to have the 65 done by then, but if not, then I will drive the 59. It is a fun car to drive on the highway, but I really can't drive it very well with the top up and if the weather turns bad, I hate the thought of having to drive several hundred miles with my head cocked sideways.
At least with the 65, I can sit straight up in the seat and my head won't hit the top!

John - just curious - how tall are you? I'm 6'6", and I have the same issues as you. I had Al Knoch take a few inches of the bottom and back of my stock seats when they were redone, and this helps some. But it is still not really fun to drive with the top up.

p.s. good to see you back - hope everything turns out well.

Loren,

I am only 6', but I am tall in the torso, and I have a bunch of extra padding in the seat area!

I used the Wiseguys seats in the 59, but it is still pretty marginal. When I sit upright, I am looking tight through the windshield header.
The hardtop gave me enough of a bump to clear my head, but with the convertible top, my head hits the top bows.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, I am feeling better every day, but am still awaiting the pathology reports. I hope to know more by Thursday.

I've sat in Billy Dawson's cars at the shows, and the Wiseguy seats do help a lot, as does a 15 inch wheel. It would be physically impossible for me to drive a stock C1 with stock height seats and a 17 inch steering wheel.

Loren,

I had a completely original 60 for a few years, and it takes a real technique for a 240+ lb guy to get in one of these cars! I had to sit on my folded right leg, and then unfold it under the steering wheel after I was in the car. I got to where I could do this with a fair amount of grace, but getting out of the car still required me putting a hand on the hot pavement no matter what!

I loved that old 60, but it was a show queen, and the 59 is way more driveable. After I got the 60 a Duntov award, I was not sure what to do with it. I was lucky enough that a guy solicited me at Hershey to buy the car on spot. I quoted him a number that I thought was fair, and he did not even flinch, he just wrote me a check. He even paid me to haul it over to Jersey for him.
