Default Y-50 Mirror

I'm trying to determine if the Y-50 mirror on my '56 is original, it has the number 5939583 stamped on the inside of the pedestal, does that mean anything to anybody?, the AIM is no help.

Also, when I stripped the paint off the door, there were multitude of holes that had been drilled for the mirror, does anybody have the exact measurements of where the mirror should be located?

Thanks,

Pierre

One indicator is the stud from the mirror base to the mirror ball; most repro's have a straight stud, whereas the original stud was tapered (although repro's are available now with the correct tapered stud). Original glass is non-replaceable, shaded, and has no date code or manufacturer's ID on it. The mirror head is chrome-plated brass, and has "Guide Y-50" stamped in an arc above the ball, and "Made in U.S.A." stamped in an arc below the ball. The edge of the glass is chamfered at an angle, and the mirror head is crimped to the edge of the glass all the way around. Paragon's #655 repro is virtually indistinguishable from the original.

Looking down on the "teardrop" mirror base: the front peak is 1-3/4" from the inner edge of the door, the rear "tail" peak is 1-1/2" from the inner edge, and the front "peak" is 3" from the front edge of the door, measured straight fore-and-aft, parallel to car centerline. You can locate the mounting bracket and gasket to these dimensions and the bracket will locate the holes.

Thanks John, as usual you provided exactly the info I was looking for. I have now determined that I have the original mirror, unfortunately it's not in the best of shape, pitted base and a few minor dents on the mirror head. I question the value of fixing it if I can buy an exact repro for under $100.00..

Thanks again...

Pierre
