Success!

The taper was causing the rod to **** during pressing of the pin, and it deformed the pin hole on the inside lip a a bit trying to enter the boss at a slight angle, which was causing the bind. I was able to make the hole round again with no/negligible loss of material.
So, anyway, the piston is supported in a cradle/depression milled out of a piece of flat bar, with a hole for the pin to protrude into,a nd the big end of the rod is restign on a taller piece of alum flat bar so the rod is truly perpendicular to the hole when the isiton is in its milled out depression.
It pressed in fine this time with out binding.

the last three were a piece of cake after I got used to the procedure, I had to take another set apart and put it back togetehr early on, as I was still learning the ropes.
I will add this experience to my file of things I am glad to have done, but would rather not do again.
Now on to fitting a piston/rod into the block and install a set of lifters etc, and check valve to piston clearance.
