Default help pulling motor

I was ready to lift out the motor from my 65 today when I hit a snag. I have a regular engine hoist and I thought I was going to be able to lift the motor from the side of the car. When I begin to lift the motor it pulls the hoist against the fender. In other words, the boom on my hoist is not long enough. Any suggestions? Will a load-leveler help? Thanks!

Pull it from the front of the car... even if you have no leveler if you go
slow you can get it out without hitting anything.

Guys I hate to bust your bubble but if he can't get it out from the side he will never get it out from the front. The length from the front to the center of the intake is something like 48" the length from the side to the center of the intake is in the neighborhood of 40".

Salty I have a hoist from Northern that they routinely have on sale that works great. The other option is to get you a new extension for your engine hoist so that you can reach what you need. Just remember not to get to long of an extension as it could cause the hoist to fall forward do to the way the weight is handled. Dave

I bought that $100 hoist and $49 load leveler online. Pulled both engine and trans from the side no problem. It had an adjustable boom on it but I still needed to pull it from the side. Load leveler was a big help.

Thanks,
b

Is your hoist arm extended all the way out?...most arms are male/female
and the male portion can be slid out by removing a bolt in the arm.
They are shipped compacted not extended.
I've pulled engines with some cheapie boy hoist out of pickups from
the front and there is usually a fair amount of space between the
front of the truck and the carb area.... Im having trouble remembering
a hoist only 40 inches long.. 4 inches past 3 feet??? doesn't sound right.

yeah, from the front is a longer reach. My hoist is from Harbour Freight, and the boom is extended all the way. I bought a load leveler yesterday, I will try that.
