I just put a set of hooker street headers (1 5/8" primaries) that I got from Jet-Hot on my '58. Fit is fine with World products cast iron heads and a lakewood blowshield. I did go with a compact high torque starter. Oil filter is easy to get in and out. The passenger side header slides in no problem. I had to jack the engine up about 3" to get the driver side header in.

Default Header Spark plug clearance?

I would like to put some headers on my 61 but my hesitation is access to the spark plugs. I've had other headers were spark plug access was close to impossible.

When we got the car, I replaced the manifolds with a set of used, unknown brand, 1 5/8" X 3" headers. These fit the car well, but the pass side collector bolt access leaves something to be desired. I also had a 2 1/2" mandrel bet exhaust made for the car. Power picked up noticably, and we got another 2 - 3 MPG.

I was quoted $225 to have the used headers coated. I will be swapping our rebuilt 327 over the next two weekends. I am wanting to lower the engine at this time. My current headers don't leave much room, to lower the engine. I'm hoping the motre compact design of the Patriot headers will allow the engine to be lowered more. If there isn't a noticable difference as to how far I can lower the engine, I will run the existing headers for now. If there is any interest, I will post back with my results.

For ausvet and wes, I have bought several sets of headers for my cars, as well as many of my friends over the last 41 years, and all of them went straight down and than back, regardless of manufacture. ( Except for fender well headers ) The patriot 8025-1 headers are clearly listed for a full size 1955-1957 chevy. I cannot see how the headers or exhaust pipes will ever clear the channel frame braces or clutch linkage.

Wes, I would like to see how the headers fit and how the engine/trans lowering goes. On my black car I have lowered the engine 7/16" for clearence on the air gap manifold. I have always lowered my transmissions as low as possible to reduce drive shaft angles since the mid 60s. vetro62

I had a set of 2-Piece Ansen (I think) headers on my 59, and an I put a set of used, unknown brand headers on the 62. In both cases, I could do all 8 plugs start to finish in 30 minutes. On the 62, I didn't find the headers any more difficult to get the plugs than with the stock manifolds. My experience has only been with straight plug, GM cast iron heads. On one or two of the plugs, you may need to use a wrench on the end of the spark plug socket. No big deal...

VetRod, I was planning to drop the stroked 327 this weekend, but had to go to a plan B. I pulled the 383 out of my truck yesterday, and the 305 out of the 62. I'm gonna prep the 383 and try to get it dropped in the 62 today. I'm going to test fit the 8025-1 headers, but I will break the cam in with the old headers (so I don't cook the coating off).

If the 8025-1 headers fit, I will re-install them and experiment with lowering the engine and trans. It will probably be the first weekend in May before I get around to making changes. We're going to try to make the Car Craft Anti Power Tour on the weekend of 4/27.
