They are WAY too loud to run without mufflers! They are also WAY too loud WITH mufflers (ask your wife)! There are several different lengths of muffler inserts offering different sound. My opinion, get the longest ones. I have always run chrome. However, on a race car, they get beat up. Whenever I reorder a HEADER, I order the cheapest (black) but keep the SIDEPIPE chrome

Amen! But try the Spiral Turbo Inserts from JCL- they are GREAT- less noise, more power!

Slightly off topic, but...
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether the 1 7/8'' primary tubes in the Hooker set-up are too big for a small block? I like the look and the sound, but I've always had the nagging suspicion that the big primaries are costing power - at least at low RPM. I don't know enough about exhaust design to know for sure so any guru's out there?

Mike66. I have the 1 7/8" on my "383" and i've got alot of torque down low. But the motor has alot of torque anyway. The sidepipes really help the whole set up breath, plus the sound "aint" to bad either. JCL   :chevy
