This got interesting. This 63 is a 327 with a 4 speed. A couple of times today I could not get the car into reverse. Got gas tonite and it didn't want to go into any gear. Finally got it into gear got home and it would not go into reverse. A couple of times it felt like it would but then the gears started grinding. Finally got in reserve and in the garage.
Is there a trick to getting into reverse or do I have a tranny problem. I do know the engine has just been rebuildt and to me it idles a tad high. Anybody have a thought?
I think the owner's manual may even give you this tip: With the car stopped and the clutch depressed, put the car in first or second gear first, then into reverse. (Reverse is not "synchronized".)
Not going into forward gears sounds like a shifter alignment problem. If you can't find the instructions in the shop manual for doing the shifter alignment, let us know.. May also be that the clutch is not fully disengaging. This adjustment is in the manual too...

correct on putting in a forward gear before trying to put in reverse - also, are you sure you are depressing the clutch completely!? if not, many times it is virtually impossible to get into gear

Here's the quote from the owner's manual {'66, don't know if the others have it too}
"Shifting into reverse is made easier if you start to shift into any other gear before going into Reverse."
Often my 65 won't go into reverse unless I start to release the clutch while trying to put it in reverse - then everything lines up and it falls right in place.
If the shifter is original and has not been rebuilt it could cause the
problems you have. Many of us have been there with hung up shifter rods and have joined the "greasy Hand Club" after getting under and pulling the rods back in position. It only happens with your good clothes on
