Default First Spring Run and Some Engine Sputters - Help

Fired my 1967 327/300HP automatic vert up this past weekend and noticed two irritating little problems.

1. At the tailpipe along with the nice rumble-rumble of the engine, I get a sporatic "click", sometimes "click, click, click". I am assuming that the car is "missing". It seems to run fine otherwise. Running a rebuilt original 3810 carb.

So, if it is missing, what things should I be checking??? Plugs?

2. During my low speed acceleration up to say 30 to 40 MPH my automatic transmission is "hesitating" or holding the rev just a beat or two too long before down-shifting. If I punch it, the car downshifts just fine. I worked on the accelerator rod and kickdown mechanism this winter to bring it back to original (see below). Is the kickdown not adjusted correctly?

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Below is all the work I did this winter, just in case something I did has contributed to the problem. Thanks.

Here is what I did:

1. All new and correct heater hoses, radiator hoses and A/C hoses and clamps.

2. New correct breather tube, air cleaner base with flame arrestor, filter and chrome top + 327 sticker. New breather tube provides correct hook for yellow accelerator rod spring.

3. New upper chrome shielding.

4. New left side shielding bracket with proper nub to hook second yellow spiring to it and the kickdown rod. Right now that is "original" configuration of springs that I am using. There is no "front" spring in the automatic set-up (see AIM M35/A8). Worried this may be associated with low speed downshift delay.

5. Correct oil filler tube, new valve and hose line.

6. Replace old non-correct alternator with new correct 1100750 61AMP - correct for my A/C car.

7. All new and correct alternator, power steering and A/C belts.

8. New correct rubber air damn at top of radiator.

9. New correct ignition coil and orange-topped capacitor.

10. New correct distributor cap and band at base. Could this have anything to do with the "missing" of the engine.

11. All new copper grounding straps - left engine mount, accelerator, and 2 at exhaust.

12. New and correct horn relay. Rebuilt original.

13. New and correct voltage regulator and capacitor.

14. New and correct dated battery, and cables.

You might try adjusting the idle mixture. It could be too lean causing a pop in the exhaust.

Clean the points with a file and reset the dwell. If your "new" distributor cap is really just a "new to you", it's suspect. Your plug wires could also be grounding out on your new shielding. Remove it a piece at a time and see if your click, click goes away.

Good suggestions. The distributor was new from Corvette Central, so I hope it is fine. I can definitely check the shielding to make sure I didn't disrupt anything.

Filing points and reseting the dwell would be something new for me. Is it difficult and is there a simple source to tell me how to do it. Always willing to learn and try. Thanks.

You need a dwell meter - the procedure is shown in the Corvette Shop Manual to adjust it. Set dwell first, then set the timing, then adjust the idle mixture screws.

Got the manual and found the section on the dwell setting. Will look for timing later. Quick question though - is this the type of thing that can go "bad" while sitting over the winter? In other words the "missing" sound is new to the car this year. Thanks.
