I've got a good one! I have a 59 with a 69 350ci. I believe the 59 tach was originally hooked up to the generator. I have a tachometer drive on the distributer and would like to hook it up to my tachometer in the dash. What cable should I use? Would a tach cable for a 69 fit in the tachometer in the back of my dash?
Thanks, I thought 62's tachometers were driven off the generator as well, not the distributor, I'll try it. Also does anyone know of a good place to buy reproduction parts for C1's in So. Cal. the only places I've seen are Corvette America, "" Central, and Eckler's and they're all back east I think.

If you connect it to the distributor tach drive, the tach will only register 1/2 of actual engine rpm; the generator drive output to the cable is at crankshaft rpm, and the distributor drive output to the cable is at 1/2 of crankshaft rpm. You'll need to have the tach head rebuilt/recalibrated to work properly with the distributor drive (there were two different tachs in those days, one for each drive system).
Thanks John. That was great, didn't even think of that. This all started when I was researching a new HEI distributor. Now I'll have to consider a new tachometer as well.
I just went through this and there is an easier way as far as I'm concerned, get a mechanical ratio adapter, straight through, 2.000 ratio, 7/8 X 18 thread size, .104 drive tip. I got mine from Gary Warren, Delaine Instruments, 1211 Berkshire Ct, Allen, Tx 75002-8654 (sorry lost the phone number). Service and product have been great. Also be careful when ordering the tach cable for a 62, many of the vendors are shipping a cable that is around 42-44" long and you will have more cable than you know what to do with. You need the correct 32"-33" cable so make sure what you are getting. I was able to route mine through the speedometer cable grommet with a little modification to the grommet. Hope this helps.

Thanks Larry, I found a place that sells tachometers for 59's that can drive from the generator or the distributor, I'm sure this will be a lot cheaper than a $380.00 new tach. I'll contact Delaine Instruments tomorrow. Any thoughts on what brand/style of distributor I should go with? I want to do away with the points and install an electronic ignition type
Gary
What type of distributor do you have now? If it's not a HEI, you can get a electronic module from Pertronix that will replace the points. I have the Pertronix Ignitor II with their matching .6 ohm coil(fits the stock coil bracket) and their 7mm plug wires(which fit using full shielding). I'm really impressed with the Pertronix.
I also put the pertronix in mine. Still use the stock distributor and cap, but speaking of tachs, mine is on the blink. I thought it was the cable, so I replaced it (dazvet you are right. This cable must have been 8 ft. long!) Still no go. I know the cable is turning because there is a bad noise in the tach, and sometimes the needle will jump. How difficult would it be to pull that tach out and find out what's wrong?
I think getting to the tach is a real PITA. The dash pod has to be removed and that's no fun, seemed easier when I was younger and could fit under the dash better.
By the way I found the phone number of Delaine Instruments:
972 396-7913.
Larry, just ordered the adaptor. It was $59, alot cheaper than a new tach.
I have a points type distributor w/tach drive and want to go to an electronic distributor w/tach drive.
I was considering an MSD or a Mallory.
It's a 1969 350ci engine, so I'm not too worried about original equipment. Thanks again for the heads up.

I installed the Mallory Vette distributor last year. Very happy with it. It does not have vacuum advance, have seen no problems with the pure mechanical. I purchased their coil, ballast resistor and the power filter as well.
