Default mid-year jacking question

May sound like a newbie question, but I've seen pictures of mid-years on jacks placed under the rear differential. Can I assume this is a safe jacking position, and will cause no damage to the rear diff?

thanks, dave

Probably best to avoid - too much prssure in the wrong spot and you will snap off one of the ears that holds the bolts for the spring.

I place a piece of 3/4 inch plywood on my jack, and jack it up in that spot, then place the jackstands at the corner of the frame before the kickup.

The spring mounting pad on the diff supports the entire rear of the car anyway, so it ought to be a great place to put the jack. I've used a block of wood and the jack there for 30+ years, no problems!

I have been jacking mid year cars up under the differential for 34 years-never had a problem. Don't jack up the front under the crossmember though or you will cave it in. WOn't hurt it structurally but just looks bad.

You can jack under diff or front crossmeber, just use a spreader block to distribute the load under the front cross member so you do not dent it, under the rear use a block that is thick enough to let the spring bolt embed itself so you don't crush it. Either way once you have it up to a confortable height, use jack stand under the frame rails for safety.

Much more convenient, and it does not put stress on the body when jacking from side to side.
