Default Paint questions

Just completed the replacement of the front end on my 61 (Press Molded). The car is now in painting. (Doing the entire car.) My question is regarding the wheel wells, what is recommended? Use undercoating? Also, should the hood be black on the underneath side or the color of the exterior? Thanks for the help.

Depends on what you are after for your 62.

On mine, I went with a semi-flat black for the fenderwells, in order to show NCRS.

Under the hood is black but the flat lip around the perimeter of the underside is body color.

Something to consider for the front fenderwells - the tires tend to throw stones into the underside of the top front fenders. This can create star cracks in the paint. If you are not going after a correct restoration, undercoating on the underside of the front fenders seems like a good method to protect for errant stones.

Did you put the front end on yourself? How do you accurate align it?

ONe thing you may want to do is paint it with truck bed lining paint. I did the underhood with that and it looks good.

I was reading the thread " Tom wanders car in paint" and he said he used truck bed liner for the wheel wells.

Best way to align a front end is use the hood as the alignment reference. Center up the rear of the hood with the cowl,a nd make sure the gap is even, the rest just takes time. At least that is what i did using factory replacemnt panels 33 years ago, it wasn't a one piece/bondedtogether aftermarket unit.

hindsight being 20/20; that's the method i should/would has chosen (and it will work for a one-piece frontend too...)

I guess I'm looking for a more absolute method. The hood itself flexes quite a bit.
I was thinking of making some sort of jig that marked the height of the current front end at certain points, but that was before I discovered that the current front end was actually a replacement clip. So who knows if it is aligned correctly.

I had it done at a quality shop. I'm not that good, wouldn't even try it myself. Bottom line is that the car won the best of show in the last two local events it has been in. I'm happy with it.

The hood shouldn't flex at all, if you have a factory hood, they are about as rigid as you can get, unless you are standing on it something.

If the hood latches are latched and the hinges are bolted to the radiator support, about in the middle of their adjustment travel, there is no flex, unless you really start leaning on it, and there is no reason to lean on it.
