I am installing a pertronix unit under the cap and have run into a little problem. ( I have no instructions) The only holes the magnet ring studs line up with are the two you screw the rotor down into. If I use these then where do I fasten the rotor? Also, does it matter if I have the module towards the front or the rear of the distributor? (had dual points)
Mine is at the front. The ring hangs under the advance mechanism, and the rotor installs in the usual place - but it is held in place by the studs sticking up from the ring instead of the normal screws. Tha air gap between the ring and the sensor should be between .010 and .040 - and check that the post cannot rise up and make contact (worn drives need to be shimmed to prevent this condition).
Older Pertronix units require a primary coil resistance of at least 1.5 ohms. Measure between the + and - terminals on the coil. Visit the junk yard or buy a Pertronix coil from JCWhitney or some such.
Bring a spare distributor! Mine crapped out on the 3rd day. Pertronix replaced it, and I quickly gave it to my brother (who'd probably call me anyway if he gets stuck)
I kept the flamethrower coil in it but went back to points - and I'm lovin life!
Hey - I keep the points and rotor screws that I removed (set "as removed" ) in the car tool box. for 5 or 6 years now, and I haven't needed them. The beauty of the unit is that you can remove it and put the points back in - on the side of the road - probably in 20 or 30 minutes. Meanwhile, no dirty points to reset or replace.
If the setup works - keep it. I went with Pertronix because it was the first replacement set up I saw that did not show or require cutting. Mallory is an old quality name in performance auto electronics. Pertronix is the new maker (on the block).
