Default 63 blinker problem

Strange problem. I've got my 63 back together(still won't start). When I turn the key to the on position, the passenger blinker comes on. I've had the steering column in and out several times to try to shut it off but nothing seems to work.Even with the column in, the lever won't shut it off. I installed a new cancelling cam. There didn't appear to be any way that I could screw up the installation. Any Ideas????

On my '63 the directional switch is mounted to the steering column under the dash in the vicinity of the pedals. There is a thin wire that moves fore and aft when you move the directional lever. The wire slips into a metal clip which moves the electrical switch back and forth. You need to verify that the little wire moves back and forth when you move the directional switch. If it does, you need to verify that it is held in the little metal clip tightly enough to make the switch itself move back and forth. If it is not moving under that dash, the little piece of metal that the wire attaches to at the top of the steering column underneath the steering wheel, may have popped out of the little 'horseshoe' gizmo that is supposed to move it back and forth when you move the directional lever. This has happened a couple times over the years to my car.

Correct on the switch and wire. You may have initially installed it in the right turn position and the wire is not secured.

I'll try to check it out tonight. During the course of the re-wiring, I had the entire column out several times. I also installed a new switch. One question, can someone post a picture of how/where the cable is connectec in the steering column? I have everything apart now, and I can't see where it should be connected.

Do you have the 63 AIM? If yes, look at section 12 Sheet 86.00.

I don't have the AIM, however I do have the Shop Manual, is it pictured/described anywhere in there?

The Bowden cable moves up and down the column when the turn signal lever is moved. If the cable is moving, the loop on the cable is connected to the bellcrank inside the steering column bell. If the cable is moving there are two adjustments. One is the switch assy to the coulmn, the other is the cable to the switch. Look at the switch and you will see a metal spring tab that depresses and allows the cable to be inserted. Release the tab and the cable is captured. Make sure the cable goes through both holes on the switch then release the tab.
So you must find the right position of the switch to column AND cable to switch. I use the neutral posn for starters. General rule is; if you move the switch, depress the tab so the cable is uncaptured.
If the cable does not move when the signal lever is moved the loop/eye on the cable has come off the bellcrank inside the column bell
as mentioned by rbarager.

Get the Assembly Manual - it's a "must-have".

Thanks for the replies. I get out of work soon. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

OK, this is starting to get BIZARRE. I was able to adjust the blinker switch. It was a simple fix. I actually felt kind of stupid not being able to figure it out myself. The brake lights work fine. Now my headlights don't work. They worked fine before. I got so P#@@ed off that I just hit the battery cutoff and came in the house. Tune in tomorrow.
