Default ignition switch light assembly

I hope to get my 63 back together this week end. The Petronix was cooked. I have a "car guy " that's going to relace it for me within the next few days. One of the things that I have left is mounting the ignition switch in the cluster. The new switch came with a light shroud. I really can't figure out how to attach it to the switch. I've checked Keen's diagrams. There was even a basic diagram that came with the switch. I've fiddled around with it for an hour--can't make it fit. My old wiring harness didn't have a shroud on the ignition switch, so if worst comes to worst, I'll installl the ignition without a light.

63 doesn't work with the built in light shroud. Switch won't go into place.

There is a flat piece that screws onto the panel above the switch and supports/mounts the lamp for ignition light.

I've tried sliding the light into the slot on the back of the shroud that runs vertically. I've also tried sliding it in the slot on the bottom that slids horizontally. Even I'm trying to be as meticulous as possible , I'm very anxious and I'm almost to the point where I don't give a crap about small things like the light. I just want to get it all back together and DRIVE IT!!!

Ren,
Refresh our memory please - do you have a 63, or a 65 cluster in your car?

The light is not worth the bother and frustration, you can barely see it on my 63. To me its worthless.

That's what I was thinking too. I don't drive it at night that often anyway. Initially, my thought was , it's all apart, it was a mess before, try to re-assemble as close to original as possible. I think the light shroud will find a home in my spare parts bin.

Know well your frustration, left the hood off mine. Tang on the indexed flat washer will fit nicely into the notch of the cluster opening, but I didn't allow enough of the switch to protrude thru the cluster for the chrome bezel to not scrub the key cylinder once installed. Such a pain to get the depth nut to move a little. On the 63 cluster there is a pocket for the bulb and socket to mount to, apparently the replacement switches for 63 are not shaped the same as the original and the replacement hits two metal protrusions on the back of the cluster for the light.

Sorry I did't take pictures while dash was out.

Default ignition lite

[QUOTE=

I cant speak for anyone but a 63 is a lil different the lite attaches to the back of the instrument panel in a position to cast a lite into the correct 63 switch which has no flat side. But the slot in switch lets in enuff lite. The switch has about three ribs running along th length of it and it has one longer than the other two and it lines up with a 63 dash board keeping it from turning. I dont know if the 65 dash has a flat spot to keep switch from turning if it does . Look in the manual if you have one and You can understand what Im saying.
I recently went to napa and got a replacement for my 63 it came with a flat side as well lite fixture
I was dumbfounded till it I looked at both switches and realized the difference. I was also puzzled as to why the switch was lit with no bulb I took dash cluster out of car to check it out further. As I had other issues and there it was the lite bolted to the panel.
I put old one back in. The only reason I was going to change it was the acc side lets me pull the keys out. I think I did that on purpose back when I was youngster so I could listen to radio and take keys with me . I dont get far enuff from it to worry about it.
If they want your stuff bad enuff they will get it. These cars were made in a era when it was common to leave your keys in IT over nite
Never give it a thought. Things have changed.
