My 64 Convertible has new front-end parts put on before I bought it a year ago. I'm starting to drive it for summer and it's developed a noisy rubber sounding squeak in the front when I go over speed bumps. The shop sprayed silicone on what they thought it might be, but not one decibel different. Since I didn't ask or look at what they were spraying; where do I begin to find it?
I think the mechanic said it didn't squeak when he pushed down on the front end and he said it must be the control arm bushings; I just pushed on the front end (very stiff), but it definately squeaks.
My 66 has a squeak in the front end too. I can push down on the bumper and cause the noise. It is not high pitch, but rather low in nature. I think is is coming from the sway bar bushings but not sure. The poly are known to squeak but not the rubber? Humm. Also, when under there, I noticed that the spring spacer had come loose. I replaced it and now my stearing wheel is off center. It tracks straight, but I bet my alignment is off. Back to the squeak; I bet changing bushings would help.
Does it have stock rubber bushings, or polyurethane? The poly bushings are famous for squeaking.
John Z speaks with truth and I fully concur. I had poly bushings in my 78 car and have also put them into my 63. The 78 squeaked every time I drove over a speed bump or hit rough surface at low speed.
I tried silicone, the grey slop anti sieze and WD 40. NOTHING got rid of the squeaks. Soooo, I turned up the radio at parking lot speed.
I was willing to suffer the squeaks to obtain the much improved handling.
