Help, past weekend tach needle on my 1963 started jumping and totally quit before I got home. Monday,of course before checking anything, I ordered a new tach cable, housing and lube. Tonight unhooked cable from dist. and turned cable by hand, tach needle moved, thought maybe I did'nt seat cable well last time I had it off. Lubed cable, as well as possible from dist. end, put it back on and yes, it still did not work. As you all can quess I am trying my best to keep from pulling dash out enough to get to the cable if I do not have too.
Think possible end of cable is broke off in dist.?!
1) Should I try hooking new cable to dist. and see if it seems to seat properly and turns?
2) If, as I fear, cable end is broken off, any ideas on removing the broken piece, short of pulling dist.?
3) Could gear or something else be broken in dist.? Car runs well without any new sounds.
Any and all suggestions appreciated!
Did you check the distributor? The most common failure is the gears in it to go bad.
Pull the cable off the distributor, hook up the new cable and leave the end out where you can see it, and see if it turns when you start the engine. If not, you have found your problem.
If the cross shaft gear is eaten when you pull it out of the distributor housing, you need to order both the cross shaft and the main shaft. Both gears are bad.
Don't waste your time buying and replacing only one. If you do, you will now have three gears that are bad.
