Default Engine or Trans mountings

I need help.

Sometimes when I take off from a stop (moderate accelloration) I get one thump or bump from under the car. Feels like it comes from center to rear of car. If I take off very gently, I usually do not get this noise. Once moving, I do not ever get any bumping as might be felt with an exhaust hitting the frame. There is no rattling or those types of noises. Could not see any broken shock mounts or springs.

Could this be a bad engine or transmission mount? Engine is a stock 327/300. Trans is a stock Power Glide. Can engine and transmission mounts be changed without completely pulling E&T from car?

I am still waiting for shop and tech manuals to arrive. In the mean time, can someone give me some pointers and changing E&T mounts if I have to?

Thanks,

Bob

Look at your rubber front motor mounts.

if they are cracked or split, just order new ones and a new trans mount (the rubber piece), and just change them all.

A venture under the car with a light will tell you everything you need to do to change teh trans mount. Good time to check for loose bolts on the trans cross member also.

You don't need manual for the mount changes, it isn't rocket science, just pay attention to how the parts came out so the new ones go in the same way.

Jack the front of the car up, place it on jackstands and use the jack to support the trans while you change the trans mount.

then use the jack (car on ground) to support the engine while you change teh motor mounts.
2 hour job at most.

Doug

Default Eng or Trans mounts

Doug: Is there any particular place to put jack or not put the jack when supporting the transmission and engine? I know the bell housing will be good but is that too far back to support the engine? Would a 2X4 across the bottom of the oil pan be ok?

How much do you jack? Is it just enough to take the weight of the eng. and trans off the mounts?

To gain more working room under car, could I first put car up on 4 jack stands at each wheel and then proceed with using jack to support trans and engine?

The bottom of the trans main case is OK to use as a support, but do not use the oil pan (risk denting it, and decreasing the oil pan to oil pump pickup distance). If you need to support the engine separate of the trans (say for a trans R&R), then make a wood saddle that goes across the bottom of the oil pan, and extends up to rest on the oil pan rails (where the oil pan bolts to the engine block). Look at the following thread and the post by JohnZ tio see a sample of a saddle.

On a 62 (or any C1) with the stock bellhousing (with the bottom stamped steel inspection cover), you do not want to support the engine/trans there.

And yes, raise/support the engine/trans just enough to replace the mounts. Do not go overboard (do not try raising the entire car via these points). As you suggested, raise the car on jack stands, and then raise the engine/trans as necessary.
