Default Are starters date coded?

I may need to replace the starter in the 65. I am not a numbers guy but I don't want to turn in a date coded part for a $15 core charge. I would rather save it for someone who cares about that stuff.
Thanks

Yes, just to the right of the part number is the date code. It is coded as Year, Month, Day----Example 5B21 is Year 5 (could be 1955, 65, 75 etc.), month February, day 21. So, 5B21 could be February 21, 1955, 65, 75, etc. Most part numbers were only used for a few years, so you would have to know the time span of a particular part number to know what decade it was from.

Default I need a 5A15 starter

And if you do not want to save it, I need a January 1965 dated unit for an original 365hp survivor that lost its original years ago.

My car is way past worrying about the numbers. I was going to save it for someone else who may need it. I'm not sure it is bad yet. I am still in diag mode of a no crank. I should know this weekend. At this point I have no idea if it is origonal. Just thinking ahead. If I do replace it I will check the numbers and let you know.

Thanks guys for the info.

I'm looking for a early March dated starter. Some thing like 5c5 would be great. Ray

I bought one from a company off ebay for my 67. It was perfect and has run fine since installation. I can't remember the name, but they were an American run company of some 40-50 years and were really excellent on the phone. I believe they had lots of vette starters. I will re-post their name tonight when I can look up the receipt at home!

Got a 7B7 dated restored starter with proper brown Bakelite solenid for 185.00 plus 20.00 for shipping. Looked great. Matched all the specs in NCRS Book and had been restored. Works great! Been in business since 1926.

The last three Delco numbers on an original 1965 small block starter will be #320.

Not much of a "survivor" if you ask me.

Well, I pulled the starter and it looks like it is the original 65. I tested it with a battery out of the car and it worked every time but does have some play in the gear. I purchased a rebuilt starter ahead of time just in case so I went ahead and put it on the car with new battery cables. Cranks now like like it never did before!

The old starter is part number 1107320. I will offer it to forum members for the cost of the rebuilt starter and core charge, $52.00, plus shipping. If you are interested pm me the date you need. I don't mean to make this complicated but I am looking to help someone out. Not sell it cheap for someone else to turn it over for a profit.

For those who have already asked, it does not meet your needs.
